Turning off emails will significantly impact the spreading of apps I think. I mainly would add apps when I got an email from a friend invite on Facebook, it basically would get me to visit the Facebook site and add the app. I'm very surprised of this decision.

I'm not sure if you're right about the "daily quote" part. The 'user must be aware of profile page widget content' section is a reference to the FBML 1.1 addition, meaning the profile page owner won't see something drastically different from a visiting user. The app can still generate the widget content dynamically for every visitor (the amount of things the user would have to approve would be enormously uncomfortable).
So daily quotes look like they will survive to live another day, now they just can't say "ADD THIS APP" in bright purple when the profile owner isn't looking.
