Just to chime in here, as elsewhere, these are by no means new. Many of us have been using these for quite some time. I really am wondering why it is that so many people in the blogging community seem to be so far behind about a lot of Facebook.

We started a group a little while ago called Facebook Is/Not a Walled Garden" - you don't have to join but it has lots of tips like the FireFox toolbar that gives you status updates on your friends, how to access different RSS feeds, how to make your profile Public to non-Facebook viewers. None of it is rocket science but at least there's a bit of discussion about the open/closed/gates of Facebook. hope this helps :)
