AllFacebook: Political and Religious Controversy on Facebook

  • Ethan · 2 years ago
Certainly not. Free speech should be granted wherever it is practical to grant it. It is certainly practical to grant it here.

Further, giving in like this would set a poor precedent. "If you dislike what someone says, just complain loud enough and we'll get rid of it." That's not something I want to see on Facebook any more than absolutely necessary.
  • inanc · 2 years ago
it should not be deleted. only the proportions of the users can delete it because this is what user-centric approach is. the true democracy.
  • Dan · 2 years ago
Should they delete? No - unless there was some form of incitement to violence that made the group dangerous in some way.

They've set a hard-to-follow precedent for themselves. I guess they hadn't expected it to be so high-profile, and now they lose either way.
  • Stu Magoo · 2 years ago
This quite clearly falls under freedom of speech - there is no hate towards individuals, just a statement that an idea is incorrect. The people complaining against this groups existense must not be very sure of their own faith if they think this group is a threat to them.
  • Dan Peguine · 2 years ago
    Of course they should not.

If they delete this one, they have their work cut out to delete the hundreds of anti-jewish, anti-christian, anti-whatever groups.
  • Brennan Kingsland · 2 years ago
MOST CERTAINLY NOT! While I may not agree with the group's premise or statements, I found nothing in it that was threatening or that incited violence.

This is what "Free Speech" is about!

This is what "User-centric-commentary" is about;like-minded people coming together to confer on their opinions.

If any group wishes to withdraw in protest, whether they are 58,000-strong or 580,000-strong, they are free to do so. That is what capitalism is all about.

Facebook will lose FAR MORE users if they cave-in to this pressure.
  • Paul Malin · 2 years ago
Facebook might want to add a banner or text to FLAGGED groups that reiterates that this is not the opinion of FB or its users and that FB promotes freedom of speech yada yada... Obviously they should not remove it.
  • brett eyles · 2 years ago
If i got offended each time a religious group espoused their sanctity of belief over my own (you know, scientific evidence based research)I'd probably try and have them taken off line too...theres a thought for a secular democracy
  • Allison059 · 2 years ago
I agree with Paul, I think that although the group is offensive to some people it is not Facebook's responsibilty to take action for other people's ignorance. I think that yes we do have freedom of speech and yes some people take it too far but just because they abuse it does not necessarily mean we have the power to take it away. Although I do agree that if the group starts leaning towards taking action against Muslims or actually if any group contemplates taking some form of violence then it should be monitored and taken off Facebook.
  • Chris · 2 years ago
I agree that free speech is an issue, when the speech is not hateful or incites violence

HOWEVER, This post is not completely accurate. The name of the group is "F**K Islam." I don't know about you guys, but when someone says "F**k you," it is not to have a "meaningful discussion." The fact that this post leaves that little detail says a lot about the bias in the article. Without knowing the name of the group, one imagines the fuss is irrational. In actuality, with a name like "F**K Islam," the tone of the group is already set to be aggressive and potentially hateful.
  • pd · 2 years ago
I'm not sure why there is a problem. If the protest group has 58,000 members threatening to leave Facebook if the group isn't disbanded (as stated in the NYT article), sure it is in Facebook's best interest to quell the group. Is Facebook bound by following the First Amendment?
  • jack · 2 years ago
well what dose every one think of this group Fuck Christianity? i am not making that group just to make it clear you know why because it is already made by the same guy. so what do you guys think should this group be deleted??
  • Stan · 2 years ago
The group should stay. Unfortunately, it draws to itfar too many fanatical Muslim youths, who rant and verbally attack anyone that attempts to initiate any rational discourse. For that reason alone, I believe it should stay, to show the world that Religion has no free pass, and must be critically analysed. Also, despite claims of innocence and holiness, we clearly see the presence of the fanatical muslim movement, which must be recognized, not wished away with political correctness.
  • christian · 2 years ago
to jack : as a christian, I find it stupid to have not protest against it, the thing is I'm not Facebook user, so that doesn't really matter much to me.
I'm actually encouraged by those moslem, they defend their religion from the attack, not like us who just sit idly, even if they want to defend their freedom of speech, they can at least change the 'f*ck' word to something else less offensive, may be Facebook should've banned such word.
  • MarcoVincenzo · 2 years ago
No group should be censored, edited, or removed. No matter what the group advocates censoring it is much, much worse.
  • Joshua Laferriere · 2 years ago
Freedom of speech, he only dissed religion in general, and in particular the Muslim faith most likely because the writer knows it's a sensitive subject, which he feels he has the right, to freely express.
  • amr · 2 years ago
off course not,you see I'm a muslim, and I realy don't care what other people say about my beloved religion no matter what they say,it has no impact on islam and from a muslim's point of view a say let say what they want, let them insult islam or even prophet muhammed as they want, they are the loosers at the end,and a say to my fellow muslims, don't waste your time on this trash,we muslims have a lot to do in favour of islam and we have so little time to waste on trash talking, and always remember how did our prophet and mentor mohammed act when he was insulted realy bad by athiests and jews, you gys just be muslims, good muslims, show the world how good a muslim is
  • Ahmed Shereif · 2 years ago
Of course it must be removed. This is not a field of free speech. Does freedom means that I have the right to hurt you? Am I free to insult you by any means?
Freedom is lined by the rights of others.
Think logically.. This is not Freedom.. This is a crime.
  • Rana · 2 years ago
we don't want to delete the groups which attack the Islam because they are a threat ,we love & respect our religion , & we can't allow any one to speak about it in that wrong way.THe disrespect they show to our religion is a disrespect to ourselves.U don't know what's Islam is, it can't be described in a few words..but if u are a muslim and u are following the prophet Mohamed's advices ..u will have the most peaceful life ever..
  • Shady Ahmed · 2 years ago
I agree with everything that Ahmed Shereif said,
of course the group must be shut down because this isn't free speech , this is insult and cruelty under the name of freedom, and it doesn't mean i can insult or hurt anybody, just because I'm free to do whatever i want.
look, we love our religion , and we feel offended when someone like this loser 'variable' say something cruel and abusive about it.
And by the way in a lot of protests groups , we say that they must delete any group that offends any religion including the F*** Christianity group not just the F*** Islam , because we are all brothers whether you are a Muslim , a Christian or a Jew, we all do believe in God.

I argue that offensive groups should be banned. While I certainly value freedom of speech under the laws of the United States government, I must also point out that every private community has the right to set limits on behavior, including speech. A business can set rules on attendance, attire, and even speech content. Similarly, Facebook is a private community, and as such, has the right to require an agreement among members to speak with respect as part of the private community. Member's profile pictures, for example, are required to be unoffensive, and yet, mainstream pornography is legal in the United States. If an online community can ban offensive images, which may be legal, then certainly Facebook can monitor speech which is also legal.

At the same time, I must admit that banning this group while allowing the other hate groups to stay would be a blatant double standard. Certainly the rules of any community should be consistent, not catering to the needs of a selct few.
  • Tom Calrson · 2 years ago
Freedom of speech was already thrown out by facebook in their terms and conditions, so please stop making that arguement. Facebook clearly states that hate and offensive groups are not allowed. This group is clearly hateful and offensive, so why is this even an issue? Facebook needs to learn how to implement conditions that they made in the first place.
  • Abed · 2 years ago
I am muslim, and i dont believe that these groups (or any group that intolerates any religion) should stay on facebook. Free speech is indeed a right for everyone, but your rights are limited. blasphemy is not free speech, its attacking peoples' belief and rights to worship and believe whatever they want to. you have no right of attacking them. Atheism however is a right! you are free to not believe in God or a religion! but that does not give you any right to attack it or deny it! and therefore blasphemy is incorrect an shouldnt be tolerated.
  • Gilani · 2 years ago
I am glad us muslims are taking a strong stance on this issue. No one has the right to judge our religion based on aloof facts and ignorant assumptions.
  • yann · 2 years ago
lol. seems like all the protest group members have decided to leave a message on here. Fact is the group will be here to stay whether these guys like it or not. The message needs to be clear: We must preserve the right to freedom of speech. Religion in particular seems to despise it.
  • kubi · 2 years ago
I definitely think it should be deleted. I understand the rights of freedom of speech and freedom of press and what not, but there is a limit and degree to what can be said. The groups leader said he was only trying to get a point across that being atheist makes sense. First, there is a much better way of getting that point across without attacking one religion and without making the group title, "Islam is a cancer. F*ck it. F*ck Islam." Also he said that people have a right to their opinions but gets offended when people say that his group is offensive, which clearly is an opinion...hypocritical? Also, he has to understand that if you are trying to get a general point across such as atheism makes sense you CAN not attack and use one religion as a target. Keep those points in mind when making a group because, especially in this era, comments like that are very offensive.
  • kubi · 2 years ago
To Stan (from way back in September):
Please don't say things like that because that is hypocritical to the maximum. If a person from the Jewish or Muslim society created a facebook group exactly the same except making the false accusations on the Christian faith, the petitions would be twice as large and much more fanatical. You see in this day of age people see all muslims as terrorists because of 9/11, which i dont blame you, however we must pry ourselves away from the stereotype and prejudice and rationalize. Do you really think if someone made offensive comments about the Christian or Jewish faith it would be whisked away? I think not.
  • Faith · 1 year ago
Well, at least if facebook doesn't comply, one of your youths can always strap a bomb to his/her chest and blow himself/herself up in a public place! Isn't that how muslims get thier point across? Who cares about freedom of speech anymore....how about freedom to not give a shit who says anything about your religion, and actually mean it. I fail to understand what any muslim thinks they are accomplishing, by dragging down a group that says what they feel? Actually I take that back, it's vengeful, angry, and foolish, all those lovely muslim qualities weve come to expect. Islam deserves to be insulted, as does every other religion. A teacher in Sudan is about to recieve 40 lashes for allowing her elementary school children to name a class teddy bear "Muhammed". A rape victim is about to get 200 lashes and prison time....for being a rape victim.... Homosexuals in Iran get the death penalty....I also wonder how long the muslim religion thinks the rest of the world will tolerate them with restraint. At least Christians are QUITE as fanatical.

Amazing that this group was pulled off for stating an opinion, even if what they said was false. But, it's dealing with people who are known for carving heads off if there is a perceived questioning of their faith. This will certainly not be the end of it. I predict that the day will come where it will be a "hate crime" for questioning Islamic ways on ANY site. The whole world WILL submit to Islam in our life-time. Islam is built on fear and intimidation FORCING the person to submit to Allah or pay a hefty price. It's a religion that is the ultimate in peer pressure. A peer pressure that kills.
